About SOMAdublin

Somatic Movement Class / Somatic Exercise Class

In a Somatic Exercise Class, you will learn a series of self-care movements to release tight muscles on the front, back and sides of your body. The overall goal is to become more aware of habitual muscle tensions in order to release them (and get rid of them ). The movement sequences are practiced in a slow manner to allow the brain to ‘catch up’ again, always within your individual comfortable range of motion and never pushing into pain. You are retraining your brain to send the correct information to the muscles (relax or contract) to allow for full control and good muscle function. For a one to one class, I will design a series of exercises specifically tailored to your needs. Every client is unique, so we will find the perfect variation of a movement that suits you. In a group class, I will teach with a more general approach while adjusting to each clients profile if possible. Ideally, you start with some Clinical sessions and continue to refine your movement with Somatic Exercise classes.

I have trained as a Somatic Exercise Coach under Martha Peterson (Essential Somatics) beginning of 2014 to teach Somatic Movement classes.

Clinical Somatic Education

Clinical Somatic Education is a powerful one-to-one application of Somatic Education. Done on a wide and low table, the practitioner guides movement and uses different techniques to release stiff muscles and encourage smooth, unrestricted movement. The range of motion is always in your control, and we never push through painful movements. We do not manipulate, but educate, so the pain is not coming back after a few weeks – given you do your daily 5-30min home practice. Taking responsibility for your body is essential to refine your sensory-motor control and keep you pain free. Ideally, you’ll only need between 3-6 sessions, and then continue with the self-care exercises, which you can do on your own without getting dependent on regular sessions to ‘fix’ you. Gain freedom and control again!

Which conditions can be resolved through Clinical Somatic Education sessions?

Back Pain ~ Frozen Shoulder ~ Neck Pain ~ Hip Pain ~ Knee and Foot Pain ~ Sciatica ~ Foot Pain (Plantarfascitis and Heel Pain) ~ Tension Headaches ~ Shoulder Pain

Clients with chronic conditions like Spondylolithesis, Fibromyalgia, neural pain, Scoliosis can expect pain relief and increased painfree mobility

I am currently in my third year of professional training to become a certified Clinical Somatic Educator, so I offer sessions at a reduced fee until September 2017

Biography:

I teach movement and dance since 2000, training amateur and pre-professional dancers, as well as teaching Somatics to professional dancers.

In 2014, I trained to become a Somatic Exercise Coach under Martha Peterson (US), after giving birth to our son Fionn a few months earlier. At that time, I was in pain simply lying down on the floor, never mind lifting a leg. During the SEC training, Martha taught me some hands-on releases for one half of my body and the pain disappeared. Having trained my body all my life, I was stunned how little I could control the tensions building up. Since then, I am working with clients on a one to one basis, as well as in group Somatics classes. I felt the need to expand on the training and applied to start the Clinical Somatic Education studies in February 2015. I have recently graduated from 3 years of training under Martha Peterson and Laura M. Gates, together with my 8 colleagues from England and Scotland.
The studies have profoundly changed how I teach, listen and work with people around me, as well as my relationship to myself. I am honoured to pass on and facilitate the empowerment I experienced and see emerge in my clients through this work.

To support my Somatic Movement practice, I further my studies with continued education through medical providers such as the NOIgroup (Neuro Orthopedic Institute Australia) to incorporate evidence-based strategies around pain, as well as with Michelle Lyons (pelvic floor health). Keeping up with the latest research helps me to position this work within a multi-disciplinary field of practitioners and clinicians working with patients living with chronic pain conditions.

I am delighted to be a regular guest teacher for Dance Ireland (Association of professional Dancers and Choreographers Ireland) in their Professional Morning Class as well as the Healthy Dancer program, as well as guest lecturing at University of Limerick's MA in Contemporary Dance Performance. I have provided corporate wellness training and classes, as well as teaching movement in primary and secondary schools both in Germany and Ireland.
