Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of high protein rich fluid in the space between tissues causing inadequate drainage due to damage in lymphatic system. A healthy adult has approximately 600 - 700 lymph nodes. Axiilary lymph nodes dissection & Radiation therapy around axillary lymph nodes area are most causative factor for upper limb lymphedema in among patients with breast cancer. Lymphedema can occur within days & upto 30 years post treatment but 80 percentage of patients experience onset within 3 years of surgery. This condition is is slowly progressive without appropriate therapy and this problem is easily manageable with Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). Untreated lymphedema can increase swelling & risk of cellulitis (Skin infection), can lead fibrosis, permanent disfigurement on affected side, chronic ulceration, poor quality of life & in rare case lymphangiosarcoma (0.45 percentage of cases) also. CDT is multimodel therapy recognized as the gold standard of lymphedema care. It has components like - Manual lymph drainage massage (MLD massage), multilayer lymphedema bandaging (MLLB), Compressive stocking, Decongestive exercises & Skin care. Treatment varies depending upon severity. CDT consists of two main phases, Phase I- reductive/intensive phase & phase II- Maintenance phase.
