About Balance Sports MassageCovent Garden

Balance Sports Massage Kingston is located within the Kingston Natural Health Centre in Kingston Upon Thames and Balance Sports Massage Wimbledon at Neal's Yard Remedies in Wimbledon Village.

About us

I am a Level 5 Sport and Remedial Massage Therapist. This involves the use of massage therapy, stretching, neuromuscular and myofascial techniques to address muscular-skeletal and joint pain as well as problems with posture and movement.

Massage therapy is generally well known for stress relief and relaxation. While I do provide these services, remedial therapy goes beyond that. People generally ask what the treatment entails. There is no straightforward answer. I treat clients based on results of postural and movement tests, current presenting symptoms and of course one's own subjective assessment, ie. what the client feels. A treatment will then use a combination of the above named techniques to get the best results in the long term by addressing presenting symptoms as well as their underlying causes. I also give aftercare advice to rebalance muscle function. I find this increases a client's awareness of their own body and enables them to participate in their rehabilitation.

Massage

Normally at the first session with a client, this includes a questionnaire geared towards understanding a clients medical and soft tissue history, lifestyle and work habits, postural and biomechanical analysis, including range of motion tests and palpation (which is an initial assessment by touch of clients soft tissue behaviour). All the information gathered from the questionnaire and tests will go towards understanding a clients problem, what may be causing it and how best to address it. From this, a treatment plan is drawn. While this plan aims to be as thorough as possible, it is not set in stone and changes may be made as the treatment progresses to address subsequent findings and accommodate clients lifestyle activity and response to treatment.

This process is the reason why a clients first session will normally last an hour and a half including an initial treatment. It could be more if the client has a long injury history.

Neck and Shoulder Massage

The shoulder is the area of the body where most clients will complain of tension. There is a theory that stress in stored in the trapezius muscle, which as the name suggests is the trapezium shaped muscle that extends from the neck at the base of the head, out to the shoulders and down to the middle of the upper back. Massage in this area of the body eases tension, addresses neck pain or injury including whiplash as well as headaches that may be caused by trapped blood vessels. Also promotes a general feeling of relaxation.

NMT - Neuromuscular Therapy

Neuro muscular or trigger point therapy is a technique that addresses problems on nerves and neural pathways that are caused by inconsistencies in soft tissue. Trigger points are points of high energy due to nerve over-activity or mineral imbalances. These problems usually manifest as radiating pain recreated by pressure on the trigger point or certain patterns of movement. They can develop as a result of chronic injury, chronic muscle tension, over-use, nutritional deficiencies and a host of other reasons. While very painful and discomforting, they are highly and easily treatable once identified.

The technique is usually used within a massage session.

Sports Massage

Sports massage therapy uses deep tissue and neuromuscular techniques such as M.E.T, S.T.R and trigger point therapy, to name a few to address soft tissue imbalances. Including postural and biomechanical analysis to help understand and tailor clients treatments to their needs.

Sports massage is used to address muscular and other soft tissue immobility or imbalances that may have been results of injury, lifestyle habits or biomechanical error. Its associated techniques are also useful in aiding recovery from injury, stress and fatigue and promoting rest and relaxation.

Sports massage is a growing field in soft tissue therapy and is highly respected and sought after due to its diverse range of tools and techniques that seek to affect the body globally through soft tissue manipulation.
