What is meant by Hair Transplant?

Hair Transplant is a surgical procedure where hair follicles are transplanted from one part of the body to the scalp or face of a patient. The part of the body from which the follicles are taken is called the donor site and the part of the scalp or face where follicles are placed is called the recipient site.

Is Hair Transplant permanent?

Hair transplants are usually permanent, as the translanted follicles are taken from areas where hair loss will not occur. Patients may experience hair loss in other areas of their scalp or face but in not the recipient site. The transplanted hair will fall out after the surgery, but will grow back within about six months. Surgeons usually prescribe medications to strengthen hair follicles to prevent the loss of non-transplanted hair after the surgery.

How long does it take to recover from Hair Transplant surgery?

Recovering from a hair transplantation procedure depends on the type of procedure. Patients may take many weeks to recover from an FUT, or strip type, hair transplantation procedure while recovery from an FUE type of hair transplantation surgery takes about a week.

What are the different types of Hair Transplant?

Types of hair transplantation procedures include FUSS, FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) or the strip method, where a strip of tissue is removed from the scalp and then hair is transplanted in groups of one to four units called follicular units, the minimally invasive FUE method where a hole is made in the donor site with a punch and single hair follicles are taken from the donor site and placed in the recipient site. The ARTAS method is a robotic hair transplantation procedure that performs the FUE hair transplantation procedure faster than traditional hair transplantation procedures.

Hair Transplant from €3000
In the FUT hair transplant method, Dr. Nel will remove a strip of tissue from the donor area, as opposed to harvesting individual grafts one at a time as with FUE. The patient’s scalp is anaesthetised and the strip of tissue is taken from the donor area at the back of the head (safe donor area), where the hair grows abundantly. Then the doctor and the surgical team will carefully dissect the strip, using microscopic dissection techniques, into individual follicular units. These prepared follicular units are then implanted into the tiny holes the doctor has made in the recipient area. FUT Technique and Trichophytic ClosureWhen Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is performed, it leaves a linear scar in the area the surgeon removed the strip of tissue. Up to recently this was one of patients’ primary concerns with FUT; but Trichophytic Closure is a technique used by the surgeon to make the scar almost invisible.  It’s a technique that leaves a far finer scar than previous techniques and gives a better cosmetic outcome for the patient, especially when they are wearing their hair cut very short after the procedure. Trichophytic closure involves the surgeon bringing together the edges of the wound, and overlapping them as he sutures them together. He cuts one side of the skin at an oblique angle (bevelling), and then brings the adjacent skin flaps together to close up the wound. Because of the angle at which the skin has been cut, the skin from both sides of the wound will then overlap. One piece of scalp tissue now lies underneath the other one, and within that skin lie hair follicles which then slowly grow through the tissue, effectively concealing the scar as it becomes integrated into the hair.
FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction from €3000
Elite Follicular Unit Extraction (EFUE) is one of the several hair restoration options performed by surgeon Dr. André Nel at the Therapie Hair Restoration Clinic. What is a Follicular Unit? In men, a follicular unit consists of 1-4 terminal (full thickness) hair follicles. In addition there may be a couple of fine vellus hairs, sebaceous (oil) glands, a small muscle (the arrector pili), tiny nerves and blood vessels, and a fine band of collagen that surrounds the unit (the perifolliculum). Since the follicular unit is the hair bearing structure of the skin, it should be kept intact to insure maximum growth, and that is why the extraction of the follicular units from the donor site is so important. There is more than one way to extract follicles from the donor site, and EFUE is one such method. What is EFUE? EFUE is a hair transplant technique. One of the most advanced and effective methods of hair grafting, follicular unit extraction uses a small round punch to extract a follicular unit and its adjoining hairs from an area of dense hair (donor site) to implant into a balding area (recipient site). The specialised punch used in FUE allows the surgeon to remove hair from the skin without causing damage. The little round scars left at the donor site heal quickly and are for the most part hidden in the more abundant hair growing at the site.
Eyebrow Transplant €2500 - €5000
Eyebrow transplants are designed to restore growing hair to eyebrows that are overly thin, scarred, or completely missing. Eyebrow transplants are designed to restore growing hair to eyebrows that are overly thin, scarred, or completely missing.  It is a surgical procedure used to address the absence of hair due to genetics, over-plucking, hormonal abnormalities, or trauma such as from burns or accidents. Eyebrow transplant procedures are performed in the same way as a hair transplant, by harvesting hair follicles from the donor site; usually at the back of the head at the lower hair margin or the margin close behind the ear, where the hair is finer. Hair Restoration Surgeon Dr. Andre Nel performs eyebrow transplants at Therapie Hair Restoration Clinic in Malahide, Dublin. He uses the FUT Strip surgery method to harvest a single strip of hair-bearing tissue from the back of the scalp. This is carefully dissected; single follicles are extracted and trimmed whilst retaining critical structures and are carefully transplanted into small incisions made along the predesigned eyebrows. A procedure typically involves the placement of 50 to as many as 325 hairs into each eyebrow, depending upon the existing amount of hair and the desired size and density. Each hair is individually placed; meticulously angled to mimic natural growth. The use of all-microscopically dissected grafts allows their placement into the smallest possible incisions so as to minimize scarring and damage to existing hairs.
