British Fertility Industry Information

The value of the infertility industry in the UK is growing each year. In 2008 British couples spent £2.9bn on IVF treatments in comparison to the £1.8bn recorded in 2007. One in six couples seeks help from a fertility specialist to help them have a baby. The average cost of fertility treatment is £6,600 and although it is provided by the NHS, subject to meeting certain criteria, it is often paid for privately by the couples themselves.

Because not all would-be mothers and fathers qualify for treatment under the NHS and private care is quite expensive many couples seek medical help abroad. On WhatClinic.com they can research fertility clinics in the UK, Thailand or Spain along with a growing number of patient reviews to help them choose where to undergo treatment.

Not all cases of infertility have to be treated with complex procedures like Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), Artificial Insemination (AI) or In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Drug and hormone therapy is often used first to improve the chances of conception. Many clinics also offer complementary medicine alternatives.

The British Fertility Society (BFS) is a national organisation for all professionals involved in the field of fertility and reproductive medicine. Infertility Network UK is the leading infertility charity offering emotional and practical support and advice to all those suffering from fertility problems.

Review I have been very very pleased with my treatment. I have been seeing my accupuncturist for about two years, and it has been very beneficial to me. I suffer with asthma, heart problems, my main problem is fibromyalgia. This leads to constant pain, soreness of joints, and constant fatigue. The accupuncture has greatly reduced the pain after treatment, which is amazing !! I can't recommend the treatment highly enough.Liz, UK, 02 Dec 10

The Bridge Centre

Review My Ivf results are not yet determined (fingers crossed!), But regardless of the outcome here I would not recommend the bridge centre; there was a total lack of information provided / nothing was adequately explained. On signing consent forms I actually pointed out to the nurse that many items had not been explained to me, she said not to worry if I needed to know the doctor would have explained and to sign anyway. This proved to be inaccurate later on - i.e. items I needed to understand had not been explained. I am not sure why the nurse thought this as you never really see a doctor to chat about the treatment. They only appear to do procedures. In the very limited dealings I had with them The doctors also generally had no time for you at all and made you feel stupid / like an irritation - as opposed to treating you like the client! In fact I have no idea who my "doctor" actually is having only seen my main consultant once about 6 months ago before I'd actually decided to embark on the treatment ( I now cannot remember his name). Embryologists were nice though and actually the only ones who explained anything - nurses generally okay (nice but not helpful outside of their pure nursing domain - which I struggled with as they were the only point of contact I had for many months) Also It generally felt disorganised, e.g. - I Turned up for appointments and they had no record of said appointment - I had started my ivf treatment and they had ordered and delivered my drugs and yet the nurses had no record of the drugs I was taking - phone calls never returned - e-mails ignored All of the above happened more than once.Frustrated, UK, 24 Feb 13
