About Leicester Fertility Centre

The Leicester Fertility Centre Assisted Conception Unit was established in 1988. Their goal is to provide a high quality, efficient and effective service, individually tailored to patient needs, They currently have a team of eighteen specialists providing a complete range of licensed infertility treatments to include in vitro fertilization (IVF), Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), surgical retrieval of sperm, egg donation, egg sharing, donor insemination (DI) and intrauterine insemination (IUI). This clinic also features private consultations and there is a monthly drop in session for patients who need counseling.

Jane Blower

Biography:

Jane Blower is the consultant embryologist at the Leicester Fertility Centre

Jane graduated from the University of Nottingham with an MSc in Assisted Reproductive Technologies in 1994

Jane started the clinical IVF laboratory service in 1989 and designed the current centre. Since 2007 she has been the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) Person ResponsibleShe is a founder member of the Association of Clinical Embryologists (ACE) and sits on the Executive committee.

In October 2010 Jane was appointed as Senior Scientist NHS East Midlands as a part time SHA secondment, in this role she offers scientific advice to the SHA, providing leadership, strategic direction, and influence for healthcare sciences across the East Midlands.

Marian Williams

Biography:

Marian Williams, the Senior Infertility Nurse Specialist, has worked as part of the nursing team at the Leicester Fertility Centre since 1992 and is responsible for all aspects of nursing activity. She is particularly keen to ensure that the service we provide is efficient and professional, and that the staff are friendly and approachable.

Marian has a background in both gynaecology and general nursing since 1979.

Cathy Clarkson - Fertility nurse specialist co-ordinator

Cathy Clarkson joined us as a fertility nurse specialist in 2003. Cathy has over 20 years experience in gynaecology nursing, when she was involved in the general infertility clinic as a clinical nurse specialist.

Cathy is very experienced in explaining and planning treatments to patients

Caroline Busby joined us as a fertility nurse specialist in 2005. Carolines background is in gynaecology nursing, and she brings a unique perspective to the team following her experience working as an infertility nurse specialist in the private sector, as well as having undertaken a period of work in the Middle East.

Helen Copson

Biography:

Helen Copson is the senior administrator/ PA at the Leicester Fertility Centre. She joined the team in 2005 after having previously worked within the UHL Trust.

Her main responsibilities include supervising other members of the administration team and managing & monitoring the finances of the centre. She also works closely with the instituto Bernabeu, Alicante, on our international egg donation programme.

His special interest area includes Reproductive Medicine, Gynaecological ultrasound and Laparoscopic Surgery..

Mr Tarek Gelbaya - Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialistin Reproductive Medicine and surgery

Tarek Gelbaya undertook his initial medical training in Cairo and obtained an MD degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2003.

He is a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Tarek has completed his specialty training in the North West region and his subspecialty training at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Manchester. He published in a variety of highly recognised international journals and presented at many national and international conferences.

Mr Gelbaya has a special interest in reproductive surgery, implantation failure and endometriosis.

Miss Neelam Potdar

Neelam Potdar is a Subspecialist trainee in Reproductive Medicine & Surgery and Clinical Lecturer at the University of Leicester. She is accredited with qualifications of MS, MD and MRCOG. Her initial training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology was in India and she speaks English, Hindi fluently and understands Gujarati. Neelam has special interest in Assisted reproduction, Fertility preservation, Recurrent implantation failure, Recurrent pregnancy loss and Reproductive surgery. Additionally, she has keen interest in research, especially life style factors affecting implantation and pregnancy

Miss Emma Harmer

Biography:

Embryologist Emma Harmer joined the Leicester Fertility Centre in 2003 as a trainee embryologist, after completing her degree in Natural Sciences in Cambridge. In November 2005 she was awarded her Certificate in Clinical Embryology and her ICSI licence. Emma has a particular interest in cryopreservation and the preservation of fertility in patients undergoing oncology treatment, and is responsible for the scientific co-ordination of our donor embryo programme.

Mrs Charlene Freeman

Biography:

Charlene Freeman joined the team as a trainee embryologist in September 2006, after completing her degree at Leicester University in Medical Biochemistry. Charlene completed her Clinical Embryology Certificate in July 2009, and is hoping to gain state registration in July 2011. Charlene has a keen interest in research, sperm donors and oncology patients. She really enjoys working in the clinic and meeting patients.

Mrs Amy Sharpe

Biography:

Amy Sharpe joined the Leicester Fertility Centre in 2003 as a trainee embryologist, after completing her degree in anatomy in Glasgow. In November 2005 she was awarded her Certificate in Clinical Embryology and her ICSI licence. Amy has a special interest in male infertility and ICSI and particularly enjoys patient contact. Amy is responsible for co-ordination of our laboratory databases.

Miss Sophie Jacques

Biography:

Sophie joined the team as a trainee embryologist in April 2008, after completing her degree at the University of Birmingham in Biological Science. Sophie has started her certificate in clinical embryology, hoping to complete it by April 2010. Sophie has a special interest in genetics.

Miss Amanda Derry

Biography:

Amanda Derry - Andrologist Amanda Derry joined Leicester fertility centre in 2005. Amanda is responsible for running the Regional Andrology Service, Donor Sperm Bank and male oncology referrals for cryopresivation of semen. Amanda brings a great deal of experience from her previous role of 16 years at the LRI as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in clinical and environmental microbiology. She attained a degree in biomedical science at Nottingham Trent University with merits in bacteriology and parasitology, she is state registered with the HPA and has recently passed a certificate in biomedical andrology. Amanda is interested in male factor infertility

Miss Janess Hanley

Biography:

Janessa qualified as registered nurse in 2008 and joined the ACU team in March 2010, having previously worked in neurology. She has been involved in nursing since leaving secondary school and has a great interest in assisted conception and reproduction. Janessa enjoys direct patient care and being able to assist patients through the specialised journey of infertility treatment.

Miss Mo Thomas

Biography:

Mo has worked at the Leicester Fertility Centre since 1989. Mo is a qualified counsellor with a specialist interest in infertility. Mo is also a registered nurse with a wealth of experience; she spent 7 years as a senior sister within the NHS Mo has worked as a counsellor with the Leicester Fertility Centre since 1989, offering counselling in all aspects of assisted reproduction. Apart from support and therapeutic counselling, she also works with couples and specialises in person centred counselling. Mo also runs a weight management clinic for men and women

Miss Linda Best

Biography:

Linda has been qualified as a Counsellor for 13 years. She has extensive experience in private practice, and Primary Care. She has worked with individuals, couples and groups. She lives in Nottinghamshire.

In her spare time she is a qualified Natural Horse Trainer, and helps horses with people problems.

Mrs Monique Johnson

Monique Johnson joined the team in 2006 after 18 years experience of gynaecology. Her roles in the clinic are to assist the medical team during egg collections and embryo transfers, providing support to patients during and after theatre procedures. She is skilled at ultrasound scanning during embryo transfers and trained at venepuncture. Monique also co-ordinates stock control within the unit and is a valued member of the team.

Donna joined the team in 2010 after previously working in the Gynaecology department as a clinic co-ordinator.Her roles in the centre are to assist the medical team during egg collections and embryo transfers, providing support to patients during and after theatre procedures. Layla joined the team in 2009 to support the laboratory team. Layla looks after the liquid nitrogen store and plays a big role in stock control within the unit.

Mrs Debra Gent

Debra Gent is an administrator, and joined us in 2005 with an extensive background in a variety of commercial administrative roles. Following a career break Debra transferred to the healthcare field. Debra is responsible for the typing of all ACU clinic letters but also arranges appointments and answers patients telephone queries

Miss Donna Matthews

Biography:

Donna Matthews joined the team in December 2006 as one of our administrators. She has previously worked on reception and now is the first point of call for all telephone enquiries. Donna uses her excellent communication skills and knowledge to assist patients. She is extremely capable and enthusiastic, providing a warm welcome for patients and visitors.

Julia Phillips

Julia joined the team in January 2011 having previously worked at the booking centre for over 5 years. Julia has vast experience in the customer service industry and is our key receptionist and will probably be one of the first people you meet. Julia prepares notes for all ACU clinics and assists in the effective running of the administration office.
