Speciality: Age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion, macular degeneration.

Professor Jonathan Gibson was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist at Birmingham Heartlands and Solihull NHS Hospitals and at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, in 1986. He is Professor of Ophthalmology in the School of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University and is currently responsible for running a large number of clinical trials for new treatments in age -related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion.

Professor Gibson is a medical graduate of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, University of London and completed training in Ophthalmology in Edinburgh and Leicester where he was Lecturer and conducted original research leading to his MD thesis.

Professor Gibson is a past President of the Midland Ophthalmological Society and a past Council Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London. He Chaired the Medical Retina Services Group at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre from 2002-2010, and is currently co-Chair of the Birmingham and Black Country Ophthalmic Research Network.

He is a current examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a past examiner in the UK and overseas for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He holds a national level NHS clinical excellence award.

He has published over 100 papers and articles, is joint author of one textbook and is currently writing two new books. He has lectured extensively in the UK and has organised regional and national meetings on medical retina disease and ophthalmic imaging.

Mr Ilango held the position of Fellow at the highly prestigious Moorfields hospital before being appointed a Consultant at Wolverhampton in March 2005.

He is a fully accredited laser eye surgeon holding the “Certification in Refractive Surgery” qualification from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists

Mr Kolli joined Optegra Eye hospital in 2012 as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon.

He undertook his medical school training at Cambridge University where he graduated with First-Class honours. He then undertook ophthalmic surgical training in Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle and completed his specialist corneal training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He was awarded a PhD in corneal stem cell biology and its therapeutic application in 2009. He has undertaken 3 fellowships in cornea and external eye diseases as well as a separate fellowship in refractive and cataract surgery.

On completion of his specialist training, he undertook locum consultant posts at Moorfields Eye Hospital (City Road and then St George’s Hospital) prior to taking up his current Consultant position at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust based at the world renowned Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

He is responsible for providing the tertiary referral corneal service at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. His main area of expertise and interest is in complex cataract surgery, refractive surgery and all aspects of corneal and external eye disease including all forms of corneal transplantation and anterior segment reconstructions. He has published, lectured and taught extensively in his field. He holds the following fellowships/memberships:
