MBChB FRCGP DRCOG DFSRH PhD. Registered 1990 at University of Leeds. He is Professor of General Practice and Primary Care, Sunderland University and part-time GP Principal in Coquet Medical Group, Amble, Northumberland. He joined Coquet Medical Group in September 1994 as a fulltime GP Principal and remained so for 9 years. In 2003 he split his time between academia and general practice and was awarded his PhD in 2008, entitled ‘Evaluation of open access hysterosalpingography in the initial management of infertility in primary care’. In October 2013 he was appointed as Professor of General Practice and Primary Care. He is the Primary Care Clinical Lead for the NIHR Primary Care Research Network (PCRN) Northern and Yorkshire and the NIHR Northumberland Tyne and Wear Comprehensive Local Research Network (NTW CLRN) and GP R&D Lead for the North of England Commissioning Support Unit. His research interests include the embedding of new technologies in the clinical consultation, pharmacy practice, the management of infertility in primary care, fertility preservation for cancer survivors and cancer diagnosis in primary care. Additional research interests include smoking cessation, thyroid disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease and complex interventions. His research experience includes the use of multiple research methods in health care evaluation including randomised controlled trials, focus groups and in-depth interviews.
