What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is performed for dental procedures for anxious patients by administering medications to help them relax. Many patients avoid getting the required dental help because of their fear of the dentist. Sedation dentistry is performed to ensure that nervous patients enjoy healthy mouths and teeth.

What are the types of dental sedation?

The different types of dental sedation are; inhalation sedation, for patients requiring mild sedation also called anxiolysis; oral sedation, by asking patients to swallow a pill; TENS, using electrical impulses to numb the area; topical anaesthesia, using a swab to numb the area; or intra-venous sedation, for patients requiring moderate sedation and general anaesthesia for patients requiring deep sedation. General anaesthesia is used for patients only in a hospital and not in a dentist chair.

Is Sedation Dentistry painful?

Oral sedation, inhalation sedation, TENS and topical sedation are not painful. Intra-venous sedation and general anaesthesia need to be injected and patients may feel pain when the sedative is injected.

When can I travel by air after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should travel by air two days after sedation dentistry. They should take the advice of their dentist before embarking on their journey.

How long does recovery after Sedation Dentistry take?

Recovery from dental sedation takes between 40 to 90 minutes. Recovery depends on the type of sedation administered.

What after care is required after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should rest for at least three hours after sedation dentistry. They should not eat for at least four hours, until the anaesthesia wears off. They should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should resume work at least one day after sedation dentistry. They should not smoke or drink alcohol for at least two days after sedation dentistry. They should follow all dietary prescriptions given by their dentist correctly.

It was a relaxed environment where I was fully listened toLouise, UK, 07 02 23

As someone who experiences anxiety related to all things dentistry, I can’t praise this practice enough. My recent hygienist appointment was my first in a number of years. It was a relaxed environment where I was fully listened to and the treatment was adapted to suit my needs and preferences. For the first time I got home and immediately booked my next appointment. I really recommend to anyone who has been put off going to the dentist before as my confidence has definitely improved since using this clinic.

A huge thank you to the dentist from me and my new wife for saving my smile on our wedding dayDeclan, UK, 15 03 22

Apologies for the long story, but it's a worthwhile read. At 9AM on Sunday 13th March I was due to jump in the car and drive down to get married after a 2 year COVID induced delay. At 4AM that morning a loud crack at my mouth woke me up, and to my horror I realised my bridge had fallen out and I now had a tooth sized gap in my smile. At 7AM, after 3 rather stressful hours I called the emergency number on Amsel & Wilkins answering machine which was immediately answered by Nigel. After explaining my emergency, Nigel told me to meet him at 8AM and he'd fix me right up. Nigel opened up the practice just for me, on a Sunday morning, and by 8.45AM I was walking back up Banbury High Street relaxed and stress-free (well as stress-free as you can be before your wedding) with all my teeth in my mouth - rather than in my pocket. By 4.30PM I was tucking into pork belly and crackling like nothing had happened. A huge thank you to Nigel from me and my new wife for saving my smile on our wedding day, as well as from our photographer who you saved from many, many hours of photoshop. Finally, my bestwoman thanks you for the additional story for her speech, one that received plenty of gasps and laughter. From a very appreciative patient for life.

At Deddington Dental we welcome nervous patients. We understand that for some people visiting the dentist can be a daunting thought. In our experience good communication and taking time to explain and discuss your treatment in a relaxing environment can help to reduce anxiety tremendously. Both Dr Taj Sihra and Dr Akhil Gupta are trained in providing dental treatment under sedation and for working with nervous patients. We can offer various forms of sedation for nervous patients. Oral and Inhalation Sedation For mild anxiety the dentist can prescribe a tablet 1 hour before dental treatment to calm your nerves. Inhalation sedation involves breathing gas and air during a procedure to help relax you. These are both a mild form of sedation. Intravenous (IV) Sedation IV sedation is offered for anxious or nervous patients after being assessed by the dentist. A medicine is injected into your arm and within seconds you feel more relaxed and less aware of what is going on around you. Treatment can be carried out in this more relaxed state. During the procedure the dentist or sedationist monitors your heart rate, blood pressure and blood oxygen levels. You are not asleep during the procedure but most patients do not remember the dental procedure itself.

Dental Implants £1800 - £3000
Dental implants are an excellent option to replace missing teeth. They are a fixed option as opposed to dentures, which are removable. No drilling is required on adjacent teeth (like with bridges), thus preserving all of your own tooth structure.   A small painless surgical procedure is needed to place the implant into the jaw bone. The implant acts as a replacement of the missing tooth root and the abutment and crown restore the part of the tooth which is evident in the mouth.   In some cases implants can be placed as soon as the tooth is removed (known as immediate replacement) but most cases are carried out after a healing period of 3-6 months. If implants are looked after well they can last for the rest of your life. They are the closest thing to having your own tooth back. Dental implants are not suitable for all patients – a thorough implant assessment would be carried out and then suitability discussed. The Process Before implants are placed, the dentist will have assessed your mouth and discussed the best options with you. An x-ray or ConeBeam CT scan of the area will be taken to check for the important structures in the area. The implant placement is usually done under a local anaesthetic. The procedure itself is painless. The gum is peeled back and the implant is placed securely into the jaw bone. The gum is then placed back over the implant to allow it to heal and integrate. The implant is left for around 3 months to allow for healing and is reviewed in this time. A second smaller procedure is then undertaken to uncover the implant and shape the gum around it after which and impression of your mouth is taken so that the crown can be made in our hi-tech lab. Once made this can be cemented onto the implant to restore your smile.

My experience at this clinic was a very positive one, with nothing unexpected or surprisingFrancesco, Oxford, 24 10 18

My left front premolar had a filling and it cracked into two. It was my first experience of having an extraction, but it was considerably less traumatic than I had imagined. The implant was inserted in stages during the following six months. On the whole, my experience at Clinic 95 was a very positive one, with nothing unexpected or surprising. As the course of treatment was always explained thoroughly in advance.
