Dr Philip Friel

Job Title:
 Principal Dentist
Biography:

“Best Young Dentist of the Year – Scotland 2010”

My professional career has resulted from a long held passion for the study of dentistry and especially cosmetic enhancement work. Having graduated from Glasgow University with degrees in anatomy (1998) and dental surgery (2000), I attained membership to the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 2004.

In 2009 I was awarded entry to Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow without examination.

Currently working in general, cosmetic and implant dentistry, I am based at Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry, a private referral clinic in Glasgow‘s west end.

I have a special interest in dental implantology combining this with all aspects of grafting and computer technology guided surgery. As a result I was one of the first surgeons to be trained in the Nobel Guide guided surgery technique and the Nobel Active implant.

There is no specialism in the field of dental implants – therefore a dentist can’t be called a specialist in dental implants.

Our clinic has a particular focus on dental implants and I have done years of focused implant training and ongoing personal development in the area to ensure I can offer the best possible standard of patient treatment and care.

My strong commitment to continued education means I travel extensively to train with and learn from globally recognised pioneers and experts of advanced cosmetic and implant techniques. Throughout my year I get involved in implant mentoring and I lecture and co-ordinates courses on the placement and restoration of dental implants. I also undertake studies into bone regeneration which is a key part of the implant process.

In 2010 alone I was in Sweden, Canada and the USA on visits to expand my knowledge of cosmetic dentistry and particularly implant work.

Actively involved with the UK-wide Association of Dental Implantology (ADI), I have been  the elected treasurer and Scottish board member and in November 2011 was named President-Elect.

I am a member of a string of key professional organisations including the British and American Academies of Cosmetic Dentistry, the British Dental Association and the International Team for Implantology.

We are pleased that the name we selected for our clinic – Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry at Hyndland Dental Clinic – was approved by the General Dental Council.

Their green light for the name was given because “it clearly indicates the nature of the services to be provided”.

In 2010, the prestigious Dentistry magazine, named me in its list of Top 50 Most Influential Dentists in the UK, specifically citing my work in the field of dental implants.

In October of 2010, I was named as a finalist in the Dentistry Awards 2010 – in the category of Best Young Dentist. Two months later in a glittering awards ceremony in Leicester I was named “Best Young Dentist of the Year” for Scotland.

In 2011 the clinic was named "Best Private Practice" and "Most Attractive Practice" in the Dentistry Scotland Awards 2011.

I am registered with the General Dental Council and my registration number is 77637.

Dr Glen Frew

Job Title:
 Dentist
Specialisations:
 Implantology
Biography:

I graduated from Glasgow University in 1978 and entered private practice in Hyndland in 1992.

At that time, through training in Gothenburg, I met and became a disciple of Per-Ingvar Branemark – ‘the father of dental implantology’ and the discoverer of osseointegration (the biological fusion of bone to titanium)

And so I became one of the first dental surgeons in Scotland to introduce implantology into day to day practice. With my considerable experience and post graduate training in Europe and the United States I am so excited at joining Philip and enjoying the state of the art facilities at the Advanced Dentistry Clinic.

I am a member of the British Dental Association, the Association of Dental Implantology, the British Society of Periodontology and the European Association of Osseointegration. I am also a clinical mentor for Straumann Dental Implant Systems.

Highly experienced in every aspect of general and cosmetic dentistry, I strive to create good karma in my surgery. The good news is that I am considerably more talented at dentistry than I am at golf or fishing!

Dr Elizabeth Glass

Job Title:
 Dentist
Biography:

Dr Elizabeth Glass is delighted to join the clinical team at Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry.

Elizabeth graduated from Glasgow University in 1986 and, after entering private practice, has had the privileged experience of providing dental care to the same patients over the last 25 years.

Observing changes in her patients’ dentition and appearance over the years has led to Elizabeth developing a special interest in tooth wear, grinding and clenching habits and the accompanying aesthetics changes as well as functional problems that these habits bring. Worn teeth lead to a reduction in the height or “vertical dimension” of the face. Restoring the back teeth properly – to the correct facial height – can have a wonderful cosmetically enhancing effect – often described as a “non-surgical facelift”. This can be combined with bleaching, porcelain crowns and veneers on the front teeth – a real complete makeover.

She enjoys all aspects of dentistry from basic care to advanced techniques and gets particular satisfaction helping apprehensive patients overcome their fear of dental treatment.

Regularly attending the latest courses, Elizabeth keeps up to date with the latest cosmetic techniques. Hence she has a special interest in crown and bridgework and the latest adhesive restorations which enable less healthy teeth to be removed.

Elizabeth believes that tooth whitening is by far the best new product in dentistry and keenly follows the professional journals so her knowledge of bleaching is absolutely current and evidence based. She is a member of the British Dental Bleaching Society.

She has a holistic approach to all health care which blends with her overall approach to caring for her patients, not just their mouths. This includes removing metal fillings using special techniques to minimise the absorption of any residual toxic mercury released when the old filling is removed.

Elizabeth has completed a year long course at the Faculty of Homeopathy - gaining the Primary Health Care Certificate in Basic Homeopathy for dentists.

Elizabeth loves the wider profession of dentistry and is particularly keen to encourage a high level of professional integrity. Thus she has a position of Dental Practice Inspector for Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board and represents General Dental Practitioners on local Clinical Governance Groups.

Once back in the UK I commenced my three year training in orthodontics at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, passing my Masters degree and Membership in Orthodontics exam in 2010.
