Dental Bridges

A dental implant is an artificial titanium tooth root which is screwed into the jaw bone through surgery. It replaces a missing or damaged natural tooth root. Today the majority of dental implants are made out of 98% pure titanium because of its strength and biocompatibility. The diameter can vary between 3 and 5 mm and the length between 10 and 15 mm, depending on the maxillary and the bone mass of the patient. Implant success is determined by its placement in the maxillary bone and its function. Nowadays implants carry a success rate of around 97%. A dental implant is a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jawbone. It is used to support one or more false teeth. In practice, both the false teeth and their supporting rod are known as ‘implants’. Implants are a well-established, tried-and-tested treatment. 90 per cent of modern implants last for at least 15 years. You can have any number of teeth replaced with implants – from one single tooth to a complete set. It depends on the state of the bone in your jaw. Your dentist will arrange for a number of special tests to assess the amount of bone still there. If there is not enough, or if it isn’t healthy enough, it may not be possible to place implants without grafting bone into the area first. Placing the implants requires a small operation. This can be carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation or with a general anaesthetic. You will not feel any pain at the time, but you may feel some discomfort during the week following the procedure. The implants need to bond (integrate) with the bone after they have been put in. This takes at least 3 months in the lower jaw and 6 months in the upper jaw.

A typical implant consists of a titanium screw (resembling a tooth root) with a roughened surface. This surface is treated either by plasma spraying, etching or sandblasting to increase the integration potential of the implant. An osteotomy or precision hole is carefully drilled into jawbone and the implant is installed in the osteotomy. Healing and integration of the implant (s) with jawbone occurs over several months in a process called osseointegration. At the appropriate time, the restorative or cosmetic dentist or prosthodontist uses the implant (s) to anchor crowns or a prosthetic restoration containing several "teeth". Since the implants supporting the restoration are integrated, which means they are biomechanically stable and strong, the patient is immediately able to masticate (chew) normally. For dental implant procedure to work, there must be enough bone in the jaw, and the bone has to be strong enough to hold and support the implant. If there is not enough bone, more may need to be added with a bone graft procedure discussed earlier. Sometimes, this procedure is called bone augmentation. In addition, natural teeth and supporting tissues near where the implant will be placed must be in good health.

Teeth bleaching is used to correct teeth discoloration removing brown and yellowish stains. Today most of the dental bleaching are in-clinic whitening. The bleaching known as “chemical bleaching” is the fastest way to get white teeth. Gums are carefully protected, and a gel phase power is applied. The procedure is safe and does not damage the tooth structure. This type of whitening is very reactive and usually gives good aesthetic results. Bleaching can cause a temporary increase in sensitivity to temperature, pressure and touch during in-clinic treatment. Sensitivity lasts no longer than a few days after the end of the procedure. Teeth whitening is not a permanent solution. Results can last one or several years depending on the habits of the patient. Professional tooth cleaning is appropriate before undergoing a bleaching treatment. Teeth whitening must be done before prosthetic restorations as aesthetic materials (dental crowns, veneers…) will not be whitened.

Dr Barry Beilinsohn qualified as a dentist in 1988 at the dental school of the University of Stellenbosch. After completing military service he joined his father Dr Maurice Beilinsohn in private practice. There he worked for 10 years before opening another practice. Currently we have 3 practices servicing all aspects of dentistry. He has been in partnership with his father for some 20 years. We have surgeries in Sea-Point, Plumstead and Goodwood. Our Goodwood surgery has been established for over 50 years - two family generations of dentists.

Our flagship dental practice is based in Sea Point just 10 minutes from the V&A Waterfront and Greenpoint.

His special interests include preventative, restorative and reconstructive dentistry.
