A guide to dentistry in Northern Ireland

The UK has some of the world's longest established medical and dental organizations. It has played a central role in shaping the ethical and scientific face of modern dental practice. The practice and structure of the profession in Britain serve as a model for many countries' dental profession.

Benefits of Northern Irish Dentistry

Our best dental destinations in Northern Ireland are: Belfast, Lisburn and Newry.

Regular checkups are a vital part of good oral healthcare and a local dentist is by far the best choice. A trusting relationship with your local dentist has emmense benefits: Dental emergencies can be dealt with by a healthcare professional who knows your medical history inside out. Even for more expensive treatments the value of this close working knowledge can far outweigh price considerations, ensuring an ongoing beneficial, oral regimen.

Dentists in the UK - Qualifications

A 5 year dental curriculum can be followed at any of UK's 13 dental schools. Successful graduates receive a Bachelor of Dental Science degree (BDS).

There are a large number of specialties that can be followed following standard dental practice including: Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, and Endodontics.

Dentists in the UK - Patient Rights
Organizations

The General Dental Council regulates the dental profession in the UK. It keeps an up-to-date register of dental professionals: dentists, dental nurses, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental technicians, dental therapists, and orthodontic therapists.

The British Dental Association is the primary representative organization for dentists in the UK.

Dental Ethics

The General Dental Council publishes ethical guidelines for the profession. These cover a dentists duty to continually update their skills, promote dental health, their duty to the profession and their patients as well as the proper manner in which to advertise their services and how to charge for treatment. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in censure, suspension or removal of the right to practice.

Continuing education

Mandatory, continuing education was introduced in 2001. 250 hours of training and seminars must be completed every 5 years to maintain the right to practice dentistry in the UK.

Complaints

There is a comprehensive system for dealing with complaints. The Dental Complaints Service (DCS) is the primary mechanism for patient complaints. Questions about a particular dentist's fitness to practice may be handled by the Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) and judged against the Fitness to Practise Procedures (FTP). These are all under the auspices of the General Dental Council.

Data Protection
The UK has an Information Commissioner's Office to deal with the protection of and access to personal data. These give advice and information on the implications to individuals of the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act.

116 Upper Lisburn Rd, Belfast Review by Aidan - Were you pleased with the treatment?
We live in County Wexford in the Republic and both my wife and I required substantial repair and reconstruction treatment. In particular my wife wanted to get rid of a denture she had required for over 30 years while I have suffered with a lifelong phobia that prevented me getting any kind of dental work done for over 30 years. In the Republic every dental surgery we visited wanted over €15,000 for our treatments and the whole attitude we encountered was clinical, cold and unfriendly and all about the money. Research led us to Dr Ian Crutchly's practice on the Lisburn Road in Belfast which is quite a journey from Wexford. After an initial visit which was very relaxed and friendly, Ian proposed a treatment plan for each of us which we were very comfortable with and was very much more affordable. I should point out that Dr Crutchley doesn't do cheap or bargain basement but compared to the Republic his prices are vastly more realistic. Our treatments were such that we had to visit Belfast on three occasions and we made a shopping trip out of each one. Every time we arrived Dr Crutchley and his entire staff made us feel very much at ease at each visit. On one such visit we stayed overnight at a local hotel and my wife had a small problem the next morning. We contacted the surgery to discover it was Dr Crutchley's day off but while we were on the line Jan, his receptionist, rang him and he said to come to the clinic and he would go straight there to see my wife. All our friends and family have commented on the high quality of the work we had done and we would highly recommend anybody looking for the highest standards in dental care to contact Dr Crutchley. While our main treatments are now completed we are looking forward to visiting Ian and his staff in the New Year.

165, Cavehill Road, Belfast Review by Anne - Were you pleased with the treatment?
I had 8 crowns fitted by Marty and am very happy with the result. The price was more expensive than some NI dentists, but still cheaper than most SI dentists, however the work is of a very high quality, Marty is somewhat of a perfectionist, a quality you would want in a dentist. The staff are very friendly. I've since recommended this dental practice to some of my colleagues.
