Root Canals

Don’t worry.

It might sound bad but in fact a Root Canal is an excellent way to hold onto your teeth with minimal work and long lasting results. If tooth decay has gone too far for a simple filling you may need a root canal to hold onto your tooth. A root canal removes all the infection and then fills the site of the infection so it does not return. After the canal has been filled you may need a Crown to protect the tooth from any more damage.

While many root canals may be performed by your normal dentist, some may require a specialist Endodontist - Your back teeth are often the hardest to perform a root canal on.

The treatment should be complete in 2 or 3 visits to the dentist.

Dock Road, Galway < 1 km to center of Galway Review by K - Were you pleased with the treatment?
My teeth look fantastic! I was really concious before of the gaps, uneveness and shade of my teeth - I've quite a wide smile so whenever I saw photos of myself all I'd be able to focus on were my imperfect teeth... you know it's time to sort them out when you start to avoid smiling! Now I think my smile is naturally beautiful - I'll be showing these off as much as I can! Before treatment started I had a pretty good idea of what to expect - Dr Moore made a mock-up of the expected final product for me to approve, and explained how he'd get there. Financially everything was very clear, there were no surpises and I think I had excellent value!

  • You go for a nap and when you wake you are waiting for the treatment to begin, but it's all done!! It's not a general anesthetic, it's safe and brilliant for nervous patients, or those with a low pain threshold.julie , Ireland , 03 Mar 10

1st Floor, 1 Prospect Hill, Eyre Square, Galway < 1 km to center of Galway Root canals: When a deep cavity, decay or crack destroys the protective layers of enamel and dentine on your tooth, the hollow space within your tooth which contains the nerve tissue, is exposed to the bacteria in your mouth. This can result in inflammation, infection and death of the nerve tissue (pulp). During a root canal procedure a hole will be made in the top or back of your tooth to access the nerve tissue. X-rays and electronic instruments are used to determine the length of the canals. After the canals have been measured, your dentist will use specially designed nickel titanium instruments to clean out the diseased pulp. When the pulp has been removed, the canal is cleaned with an antiseptic solution, which helps to treat the source of the infection. Once the canals have been thoroughly cleaned and the dentist has made sure that the infection has been removed, the roots are sealed using the most up to date methods. A temporary filling is then placed to cover the new root filling. The crown of the tooth should then be restored with a permanent filling or crown as soon as possible.

Forster court, Galway city < 2 km to center of Galway Review by Damien - Were you pleased with the treatment?
I would highly recommend this clinic. Mary and her team do an excellent job. It has a very friendly atmosphere and Mary has you completely at ease during the visit. Bronagh is also a great hygieniest. A couple of treatments by her saved me at least €1,000 (amount quoted by another dentist to get my gum disease sorted!!) They also ring you the day before to remind you about your upcoming visit - the call only takes a minute but it is great to be reminded as I tend to forget my appointments :-)

1 Devon Park, Lower Salthill, Galway City < 1 km to center of Galway Root canals: Endodontics is the study and expertise relating to the inside of the tooth. The pulp(inside of the tooth) is very sensitive and can be subjected to biting/grinding, bacteria from dental decay or fracture of a tooth structure. These can lead to exposure of the very sensitive nerves and blood vessels of the pulp, inflammation, infection and abscess formation. All of these will result in varying degrees of pain. In the early stages of irritation and inflammation the tooth is sensitive to heat and/or cold and the pulp can be saved by relatively uncomplicated treatment. Once severe inflammation or infection sets in the only treatment is to remove the diseased tissue with small delicate files, at the same time cleaning and shaping the root canal system, flushing out the debris and applying specialised medicamentsto kill the bacteria. After this the canal must be completely sealed to prevent recurrenceof bacterial invasion. It is important that the tooth is restored with a Filling, Onlay or Crown as soon as possible after completion of the root treatment. Leaving the infection will cause a lot of pain and could be dangerous when it spreads beyond the local tissues.
