What is Dental Contouring?

Dental contouring and reshaping is a procedure where the dentist then sculpts your tooth to a desired shape.


You might need a dental contouring if:

  • You have chipped or cracked teeth and you want to improve their appearance
  • Your teeth are irregularly shaped
  • If you teeth are slightly overlapping
  • You bite is slightly out of alignment

Things to be aware of:

  • This is a permanent procedure; whatever is removed cannot be restored naturally
  • You teeth can become weaker if large amount of the tooth surface are removed
What is the procedure like?

Your dentist will take x-rays of the teeth that you want to reshape. This tells them the position of the inner parts of the tooth and helps determine how much of the tooth surface can be safely removed. The teeth are then marked up with a pen. The surface area to be removed is slowly stripped away using a drill or laser. The teeth are then shaped further using a rough paper and finally smoothed and polished.  All of this can normally be done without the need for an anaesthetic.
