Dental Bridges

Dentists believe that the best teeth are your own teeth. They will do all they can to make sure you keep your teeth. But sometimes, a tooth is badly damaged or lost. The good news is bridges (also called “fixed bridges”), dental implants and dentures are all available options to replace one or more missing teeth.

A bridge is held firmly in place by crowning healthy teeth on each side of the missing one(s). You cannot take a bridge out; it is cemented to your teeth.
If a tooth is lost, it is important to replace it with a false (or artificial) tooth as soon as possible. This procedure will prevent your remaining teeth from drifting out of line and causing other problems.
Like crowns, bridges can be made of different kinds of metals, porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal. They are strong and last for about 10 years on average, if you take good care of them. Your dentist will show you how to use a floss threader to floss under and around the false tooth (or teeth) in the middle of the bridge.

Bridges and replacement teeth may not be as strong as your natural teeth, so;

• Wear a night guard if you clench or grind your teeth at night.
• Do not bite down on hard objects (i.e. forks, bottle caps, etc.)
• Do not use your teeth to open or cut things.
• Do not do these things with your natural teeth either.

Dental Crowns

If your tooth is damaged but not lost, a crown (also called a cap) can be used to cover the damaged tooth. A heavily restored tooth becomes weak; a crown protects your tooth from further damage.

You may need a crown if;

• You have a root canal;
• You have a large filling in a tooth;
• You have a broken tooth; or,
• Your tooth is badly stained, not the right shape or out of line.
Crowns can be made of different kinds of metals, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. They are strong and last for about 10 years on average, if you take good care of them. Brush and floss your crown, just like you clean your natural teeth.

Crowns and replacement teeth may not be as strong as your natural teeth, so;

• Wear a night guard if you clench or grind your teeth at night.
• Do not bite down on hard objects (i.e. forks, bottle caps, etc.)
• Do not use your teeth to open or cut things.
• Do not do these things with your natural teeth either.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that a dentist places into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. After teeth have been lost, there is no longer any stimulation to the bone in that area and the bone will actually begin to shrink away. This can affect the overall health of your mouth in many ways such as change in chewing, speech and shifting of other teeth. This unhealthy bone loss can make your jaw line recede. Dental implants can also help prevent deterioration of the jawbone caused by loss of teeth, so your face retains its natural shape. Dental implants can act to not only replace your missing teeth but also are the only “tooth replacement modality” that will also preserve bone levels. We can also use implants as an alternate to bridgework and eliminate the need to grind down healthy teeth when replacing one or more adjacent teeth.

Dental implants are so natural-looking and feeling; you may forget you ever lost a tooth. You know that your confidence about your teeth affects how you feel about yourself, both personally and professionally. Perhaps you hide your smile because of spaces from missing teeth. Maybe your dentures dont feel secure. Perhaps you have difficulty chewing. If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to smile, speak and eat again with comfort and confidence, there is good news! Dental implants are teeth that can look and feel just like your own! Under proper conditions, such as placement by a dentist and diligent patient maintenance, implants can last a lifetime. Long-term studies continue to show improving success rates for implants.

Fillings

If you have a cavity that needs a filling, there are different kinds of fillings to do the job. The two main fillings we do here at Brentwood Village Dental Clinic are:

 and

. Your dentist cares about your oral health. If you have any questions or concerns about fillings, talk to your dentist. He or she will advise you on the type of filling that works best in your particular case.

Amalgam Filling

Dental amalgam fillings are sometimes called “silver” fillings. Because these fillings are silver in colour, they are primarily used to fill back teeth. They are a mix of metals such as silver, mercury, copper and tin. To place this filling, your dentist may first give you local anaesthetic (“freezing”) so you do not feel any pain. Your dentist then takes out all traces of decay from the tooth and shapes the hole. The amalgam materials are mixed together in a “shaker” and packed into the hole in layers. Unlike a composite filling, which is hardened instantly with a special light, amalgam fillings take time to harden (approximately 24 hours).

Advantages

• These fillings are the least expensive type of filling.
• They last a long time.

Disadvantages

• The silver colour may not be aesthetically pleasing.
• They contain mercury (studies have shown that amalgam fillings do not cause illness; they have been used on    people for more than 150 years).

White Filling

Composite fillings are also called plastic or white fillings. To place this filling, your dentist may first give you local anaesthetic (“freezing”) so you do not feel any pain. Your dentist then cleans all decay from the tooth and puts a glue (or bonding material) on the inside of the hole. Composite resin is put into the hole in thin layers. Each layer is hardened with the help of a special light that your dentist holds over the tooth. When the last layer of the filling is hard, your dentist shapes the filling so it looks and feels natural.

Advantages

• These fillings will be the same colour as your natural teeth.

Disadvantages

• This kind of filling may break more easily than an amalgam filling and may not last as long.

• Composite fillings cost more than amalgam.

Mouth Guard

Night Guards

What is a night guard?

It is a custom plastic appliance made specifically to fit your teeth. Night guards are generally worn only at night when you are sleeping.

Why do I need a night guard?

An extremely large number of people grind, gnash, and/or clench their teeth while sleeping. Many people are unaware that they are doing this. It is sometimes thought that grinding will occur during periods of stress. We believe now that while stress may enhance your periods of grinding, it is not the only cause. While you are asleep, your teeth will come together about two to four hours during seven to eight hours of sleep. When there are irregularities in the chewing surfaces of your teeth, an automatic reflex occurs (by grinding) to eliminate a spot where it is too high. Your neuro-muscular system steps into high gear and extends extreme pressure through the muscles of the mouth and jaw to grind away your teeth in a never ending battle which does nothing but cause aches and pains.

How does a night guard help?

Night guards prevent you from grinding your upper and lower teeth surfaces against each other, so those unconscious efforts to correct the irregular chewing surfaces on your teeth are completely thwarted and therefore there is NO MORE GRINDING.

Root canals

When the nerve of your tooth becomes infected, a successful root canal treatment lets you keep the tooth, rather than having to pull it out. Keeping your tooth helps to prevent bone loss, as well as your other teeth from drifting out of line, causing jaw problems. Saving a natural tooth avoids having to replace it with an artificial tooth.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as root canal therapy or endodontic treatment, is the process of removing infected, injured or dead pulp from your tooth. The space inside the hard layer of each tooth is called the root canal system. When bacteria (germs) enter your tooth through deep cavities or cracks, you tooth can become abscessed. An abscessed tooth is a tooth with an infection in the pulp. If pulp becomes infected, it needs to be removed. An abscessed tooth may cause pain, swelling and/or headache, or it may be completely asymptomatic. If left untreated, and abscessed tooth can cause serious health problems.
