Face lift surgery is a surgical procedure designed to smooth the loose skin on the facial skin, jowls, and neck in both men and women. Candidates for a facelift include those with deep lines or folds (nasolabial folds) running from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth, loss of a well-defined jawline, deep wrinkles in the cheeks, and loose skin, wrinkles, and "cords" or excess fat in the neck. In this procedure, underlying tissues are tightened, excess fat is removed, and the skin is gracefully re-draped for a natural and more youthful appearance. A facelift (technically known as rhytidectomy) can't stop the aging process. What it can do is "set back the clock," improving the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping the skin of your face and neck. A facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery, or nose reshaping.

Your cosmetic or plastic surgeon will evaluate your face, skin and underlying bone structure, and also discuss the expected outcome of the surgery at your first consultation. Your current medical condition will also be evaluated, to assess whether any issues such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting problems, or the tendency to form excessive scars are likely to cause problems during or after surgery. If you are a smoker or take any medications or drugs (especially aspirin or other drugs that could affect clotting) please ensure you inform your surgeon during the consultation. Before cosmetic surgery, your surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery and also guidelines on eating, drinking, smoking and taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications. For a smoker, you should stop smoking at least 1-2 weeks before and after surgery, because smoking inhibits blood flow to the skin and can interfere with the healing of your incision areas. You may let your hair grow out to hide the scars while they heal.
