In recent years, Poland has emerged as a popular medical tourism destination. Polish doctors provide an attractive option for people in nearby countries who are seeking a high standard of treatment at an affordable price. Dentistry, plastic surgery, fertility treatment, medical diagnostics and orthopaedic surgery are just some of the kinds of procedures which medical tourists seek in Poland, and private clinics across the country are seeking to attract foreign patients. In these sectors prices are currently 40 to 70% less than in many parts of Europe, as well as the United States.

Although the cost of treatment is the most common reason, there are many others why patients are prepared to travel. For example, Polish clinics invested in multi-lingual staff, who are briefed to understand foreign patients' expectations and to assist with travel arrangements. Practices have had to be flexible and extend their opening hours. Some medical tourism companies offer treatment packages with local support, some modest sightseeing plus recovery and recuperation in first-class spa resorts.

Poland as an attractive destination

There are many factors which make Poland an attractive destination:

  • Price - patients who are facing a treatment bill can often save a considerable amount, even after taking into consideration the cost of flights and accommodation.
  • High standards - doctors in Poland are highly skilled, with many having worked in other countries, including US and UK. Many clinics are ISO certified and have accreditation with the international Quality Monitoring Centre. The assurance of EU monitored quality levels in materials and facilities make Poland highly competitive. The Polish Chamber of Physicians and Dentists is a professional body which ensures that high standards are maintained. However, patients are advised to be thorough in researching their options.
  • Modern clinics - there are numerous clinics and hospitals equipped with the latest technology. Infection control and safety is taken very seriously.
  • Location - Poland is very close to the United Kingdom and Ireland, with many cities available in approximately two hours by air.
Healthcare in Poland

The Ministry of Health holds overall responsiblitiy for the management of healthcare. Doctors are registered with the Polish Chamber of Physicians and Dentists, an independant body responsible for overseeing the profession in Poland. It is divided into regional chambers with activities co-ordinated by the Supreme Medical Council.

The basic medical degree takes 6 years. Graduates are awarded the title M.D. ('lekarz') and following this doctors either complete a compulsory 1 year internship or apply for training in one of the basic specialties: internal medicine, emergency medicine or family medicine. Poland operates a mandatory system of compulsory continuing education with all practitioners required to amass 250 continuing education points in a 5 year period. Continuing education points are only valid for accreditited courses and failure to gain the required number of points results in the suspension of the right to practice. Professional organizations help organize training and seminars specific to their specialties.

Review I was so impressed with the cleanliness and comfort provided by EMC. I had a tummy tuck on 23/08/12 by Dr. Wojciech Waclawowicz, the most caring, honest, and skilful surgeon. At first consultation he asked what my expectations were, and told me what I could realistically expect from the surgery. I went to theatre early in the morning, and before I knew it I woke up in intensive care which is usual for 24 hours after surgery. A lovely nurse Margaret looked after me, always concerned that I should not have any pain (which I didn't!). I had expected to be in agony, and unable to stand up fully for a few days, but later in the afternoon I got up to use the bathroom, and apart from being a bit light headed, I felt fine. I was impressed that most of the nurses spoke English, and there was never a difficulty with communication. The rooms were comfortable, and Dr W was present at every dressing change. I expected to go to my hotel 2 days post op, but Dr W wanted me to stay an extra day as one of my drains was still collecting fluid. I knew I was in the right place, and was happy to stay the extra night. I returned daily for dressing changes, and 4 days after my tummy tuck, I had upper eyelid surgery, again performed by the wonderful Dr.Waclawowicz. It was done under local and was a quick and painless procedure. I had a fantastic few days in Wroclaw, and fell in love with Poland and the Polish people. I had no problem touring the shops 3 days after having a tummy tuck - I still find that amazing! I had the sutures removed just before I went home 9 days after my tummy tuck, and 5 days after eyelid surgery. The upper eyelid scars after 5 days were barely visible. I was sad to say goodbye to Poland, but will be back in Dec for breast uplift. EMC is the best :-)Anonymous, Hereford, 12 Oct 12
