Breast Implants

Breast Augmentation is our most requested cosmetic surgical procedure. It owes its popularity to its ability to dramatically improve the appearance of a womans breasts and enhance their self image and self confidence.

Most women with good general health and with reasonably strong supportive tissues are suitable candidates. Breast Augmentation is not normally done on girls under the age of 18 or on women over the age of 55 years. If you have significant sagging of the breasts, you may need a breast lift (Mastopexy) in addition to an augmentation.

The procedure is best done in Hospital under General Anaesthesia and generally takes approximately 2hours. It is rarely necessary to stay in hospital after the procedure, you are usually allowed to go home 2 hours after the procedure.

Rest is recommended for the first few days after surgery and you need to wear a supportive sports bra for the first 12 weeks. The level of discomfort immediately after surgery varies from patient to patient and with the position of the implants. Most patients are back to work within 2 weeks although it is advisable to avoid strenuous physical activities for the first 6-8 weeks.

Eyelid surgery

In terms of your face, your eyes are your most important asset. When your eyes look bright and youthful, so do you. When your eyes look tired you do too.

As we get older, our eyes can develop heaviness or hooding on the upper eyelids as well as bags under the lower eyelids, both due to variable amounts of excess skin, muscle and fat. Removal of these changes and restoration of a more youthful look to the eyes is known as Blepharoplasty and can dramatically improve the appearance of ones eyes as well as the way they feel about them.

Blepharoplasty can be done either by scalpel or laser. However, we too share the opinion of other surgeons that the use of a laser has made blepharoplasty a much safer procedure with a far quicker recover and return to everyday activities.

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty takes an average of 1 1/2 hours and Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty about 1 hour. Blepharoplasty is performed in a hospital under General Anaesthesia. In the case of Upper Eyelids you will need about 7 days off work and with Lower Eyelids about 3-4 days.

Blepharoplasty can dramatically freshen and rejuvenate ones eye appearance but as with other facial rejuvenation surgery you should not fear that you will look unnatural or that everyone will immediately recognise that youve had your eyes done.

As we age, our skin progressively loses its elasticity and starts to sag causing looseness and wrinkles. The deeper layers of the face, namely the fat and muscle layers, also develop laxity and contribute to this downward migration of the facial skin.

This sagging of the skin and deeper tissues produces the following commonly seen signs of facial ageing:
- In the brow area it creates a heavy or hooded appearance over the eyes.
- On the cheeks and sides of the face it produces loose skin, especially along the lower face and jawline.
- Around the neck the skin becomes loose and ultimately develops vertical folds.

Surgery is the ONLY way of lifting sagging skin. Frequently advertised treatments for non-surgical facelifts simply do NOT produce any long term improvement.

Facelift techniques have improved considerably over recent times. No longer is the skin stretched back producing that telltale wind tunnel look. The modern principles of facelifting are to minimise the extent of the incisions where possible, tighten the SMAS muscle under the skin to lift the sagging tissues and finally to suture the skin in position without tension. The less extensive Mini-Lift provides excellent correction when the skin laxity does not extend below the level of your larynx. If however, there is much sagging and skin laxity extending below your larynx you will instead need a Standard Face & Neck Lift.

Dr Mayson will advise you on all of your options and costs in detail at your initial consultation.

Face and neck lift surgery takes an average of 4-5 hours and is usually carried out in hospital under Intravenous (Twilight) Sedation with Local Anaesthesia. As would be expected, there is some bruising and swelling of the face but this largely settles within 3 weeks. Some areas can feel a little numb or tight immediately after but these symptoms eventually settle as well.

Liposuction is indicated for the removal of genetically pre-determined fat deposits that are out of proportion to the rest of your body. In contrast to other body fat, the fat cells in these genetically pre-determined deposits are characteristically resistant to diet and exercise. Weight reduction may slightly reduce the overall prominence of these deposits but you will lose more from your other body areas and so the disproportion will remain. Liposuction, however, can permanently remove these deposits by removing the excess fat cells that are the cause of the deposit.

Basically, any area of disproportion due to excess fat can be corrected by Liposuction. Liposuction should be regarded primarily as a body re-shaping procedure and not a way of losing weight. Common areas in women include the abdomen, hips, inner and outer thighs, around the knees and under the chin. Men, in comparison, tend to develop genetic deposits on the flanks (love handles), abdomen, breasts and under the chin.

Liposuction permanently removes the fat cells that make up the deposit and the remaining cells left behind in the treated area do not have, unlike other body cells, the ability to multiply and replace those cells removed by the liposuction. Therefore, if you maintain your weight after Liposuction, you will keep your new shape!

Tumescent Liposuction when performed in accordance with established principles is a very safe and effective procedure. As a general rule, most cases are done under General Anaesthesia in a Hospital or Day Surgery. For the best possible result, you must wear a compression garment for the first 6 weeks after your procedure. This garment will not be obvious under appropriate clothing.

Even though you will notice an improved shape immediately after your procedure, the treated areas continue to contract down over the next 3-4 months. Therefore, you may not see your final result until 3 or even 6 months after your procedure.
