Gastric Bypass
Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery
The mini-gastric bypass procedure has gained popularity in recent years. This type of bariatric surgery was originally developed by Dr. Robert Rutledge in 1997. While traditional gastric bypass surgery results in excellent weight loss, the procedure is technically challenging and carries a bigger complication risk. The Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery was developed to reduce operating time and complications, as well as simplify the procedure in general. The MGBP is a both restrictive and malabsorptive procedure. This means that it reduces the size of your stomach, restricting the amount you can eat; it also reduces absorption of food by bypassing up to 6 feet of intestines. Recent studies show that it may lead to similar weight loss (some studies show that mini-gastric bypass may actually produce more weight loss), and reduce overall complication rates compared to gastric bypass surgery. Method: Our bariatric surgeon Dr. Carlos Beltran performs mini gastric bypass surgery laparoscopically making several small 1/4- to 1-inch abdominal incisions. After you receive general anesthesia, your bariatric surgeon will: * Divide the stomach with a laparoscopic stapler creating a new small stomach pouch. Most of the stomach is no longer attached to the esophagus and will no longer receive food. Your new stomach pouch is much smaller and has a shape of a small tube. * Between 2 to 7 feet of intestines are bypassed. The surgeon will attach the remainder of the intestines to the new stomach. Food now flows into your small tub-like stomach and then bypasses between 2 to 7 feet of intestines where it resumes the normal digestive process in the remaining intestine. Close the incisions with staples or stitches.

Gastric Band
The Lap Band System, also known as laparoscopic gastric banding, is an innovative surgical treatment developed to help you achieve significant reduction in excess body weight. Of all the surgical procedures for reducing the capacity of the stomach, laparoscopic banding is the least invasive. The Lap Band System is unique because the band’s diameter is adjustable to meet each patient’s individual needs. Other procedures permanently alter the size of the stomach. The name “Lap Band” is an abbreviated and trademarked combination of the words representing the surgical technique and the product employed in this method (“Lap” from laparoscopic and “Band” from gastric band).
