Non-traditional acupuncture or medical dry needling reinterprets the traditional apparatus of "meridians" and "points" and is based on the modern understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. In many cases dry needling is used on "trigger points" in muscles, these are tender points within muscles which cause pain when pressed and radiate pain to other areas.
