Acupuncturist Consultation (1 hour)

Acupuncturist Consultation - Point of Health

Acupuncture is medical system which originated in China and dates back over 2500 years. In the west, it is often believed that acupuncture is the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment. Although it is a highly effectively procedure, it is a subsidiary component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). A qualified TCM doctor will be the best person to decide which treatment is indicated based on TCM diagnostics.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, single use, stainless steel needles into specific points in the body which re-establish health, by rectifying the bodies own self healing mechanisms. Needles are left in for approximately 25 minutes. Each session the doctor assesses changes that have occurred and a new point prescription is used. Depending in the presenting condition, patients generally receive a course of acupuncture treatments.

Auricular Acupuncture (1 hour)

Auricular acupuncture involves the insertion of very short and thin ear press needles, usually shorter than 1mm into certain points in the ear, to treat various disorders. These needles are taped down and remain in the ear for up to a week so that the patient can experience continual benefit from the stimulation. This is generally a pain free treatment, and if anything the patient may experience a slight prick when the ear press needle is inserted. Tiny seeds are also used as an alternative to the ear press needles which are also taped into the ear. Theoretically the Chinese mapped out the entire body into the ear and so the doctor is able to treat the neck for example by placing and ear press needle into the neck region of the ear. Auricular acupuncture is particularly effective in treating addictions and cravings and has become an increasingly popular form of treatment in addiction centres around the world.

R450 - R590

Electro-Acupuncture (1 hour)

Electro-acupuncture allows the doctor to stimulate the acupuncture points to achieve a more tonifying or stronger treatment than with just acupuncture needles alone. Small electrodes are placed onto the ends of the acupuncture needles, and a pulse is sent through them. The pulse is turned up very gradually to a level that the patient is comfortable with. This technique may only be used on certain points and in certain circumstances. Your doctor will be able to advice you on this.

Fertility Acupuncture (1 hour 30 mins)

Dr Coucoumbros is particularly involved in and interested in fertility and gynaecological issues. Chinese Medicine treatment for fertility is non-invasive. It involves the prescription of individualized herbal formulae, acupuncture, relaxation exercises, as well as lifestyle and dietary guidance. Herbal medicine is taken daily and the patient is required to return for weekly, fortnightly or monthly acupuncture treatments. Research suggests an increased numbers of live births among IVF patients receiving acupuncture, than those not. Interestingly a number of IVF clinics in the America consider acupuncture a standard treatment for their IVF patients.

Dietician Consultation

“The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” ~ Thomas Edison

Food is not merely something we consume for enjoyment and to fill ourselves up with. It should be a fundamental consideration for any disease prevention and resolution, and is arguably the most important elixir for the body and its health.

During a consultation, the patient is thoroughly questioned and examined. Once the doctor has obtained all the necessary information a pinpointed diagnosis is made according to the Chinese medicine differential diagnostic system. This means that every patient is viewed as an individual, and can never present or have the exact same diagnosis as another person because disease manifests in different way depending on each individual’s unique constitutional makeup. Based on this diagnosis the doctor is then to able recommended specific foods to avoid or eat to facilitate healing and re-establish health within the body.

Chinese medicine places significant importance on the various flavours and temperature qualities of food. Temperatures include heating, cooling, warming, drying and moistening. Flavours include sweet, sour, pungent, salty and bitter. These flavours and temperatures have certain therapeutic or harmful effects on the various organ systems depending on the individual’s constitutional makeup and differential diagnosis, and so correct Chinese medicine nutritional guidance is highly beneficial towards correcting underlying imbalances and alleviating disease processes. Large emphasis on correct nutrition should always be addressed on the journey towards health.

Physiotherapy

R380 - R450

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a technique which involves the insertion of fine sterile needles into various trigger points and muscles in the body which causes the muscles to relax. It is widely used by physiotherapists and chiropractors and should not be confused with acupuncture which is an entirely different medical system altogether. Acupuncture points are chosen along channels based on Chinese Medicine diagnostics and theoretical applications. Points very are seldom targeted at one specific spot as with dry needling, as the body is interconnected and hence is treated as such.

Holistic Health

Acupressure

Although acupuncture for most is a very relaxing experience, it is not everyone’s cup of tea. For those with needle phobias or bleeding disorders, acupressure is a good alternative. Acupressure involves the gentle massage of acupoints along the meridians in order to achieve certain therapeutic results. It is also a good alternative for young children, who tend to much faster than adults to treatment.

Holistic Health Consultation

Chinese medicine is a holistic medicine. Many people have come to define holistic as ‘natural’ or ‘alternative’. But, in fact, by definition, holistic means, ‘Characterized by the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole’. ~Oxford dictionary.

So it can be said that in the diagnoses and treatment of a patient, the Chinese Medicine draws from all factors both internal and external that contribute to the individual’s current state of health. The resulting diagnosis and treatment is therefore always unique to each individual as no two people can ever be exactly the same. A good example in clinic might present as follows. If you present with migraine, the Chinese medicine doctor doesn’t simply diagnose migraine and treat with one analgesic or pain killer for all patients with migraine. Instead the migraine is then sub-divided into various patters, like Liver yang rising, Liver qi stagnation, blood stagnation, blood deficiency to name just few.

This diagnosis is ascertained by assessing patient history as well as a multitude of accompanying signs and symptoms that may present, such as thirst and irritability, or perhaps dizziness and pale menses. With this information, the TCM doctor is able to formulate a symptom complex and make an individuated diagnosis and treatment. It is this pinpointed diagnostic system that makes Chinese medicine so effective.
